CHRISTEN CHRISTENSEN

         1845–1923, født i Sandefjord, norsk industrimann og hvalfangstreder, far til Lars Christensen. Overtok 1868 farens skipsbyggeri Rødtangen, det senere Framnæs Mek.Værksted . I 1881/82 begynte Christensen å bygge en rekke selfangstskuter på løpende bånd, alle med hjemsted Sandefjord. Skutene fikk navnet JASON, ELIDA, HERTHA og FORTUNA.
         Begynte i 1880-årene som selfangstreder og sendte ekspedisjoner til de vest-antarktiske øygrupper.
         I 1889 solgte han alle til A/S Oceana hvor han selv var disponent. Chr.Christensen var et geni når det gjaldt å kjøpe opp virkelige verdier i konkursboauksjoner. I 1886 kjøpte han av Knutsen og Herlovsens konkursbo i Larvik for Nkr.74.000, 5 stk bottlenose fangere. Taksten lød på Nkr.300.000.
         Chr.Christensen var den 21.januar 1895 blitt utnevnt til ridder av 1.klasse av St. Olavs Orden. Den 11. september 1911 ble han utnevnt til kommandør av 2. klasse av St Olavs Orden "for almennyttig virksomhet".
         Chr.Christensen tok ut tre patenter som var direkte tilknyttet hvalfangsten. Patentene har nummer 21240, 21345 og 21346 og omfatter hovedsakelig patenter i forbindelse med

foredlingen av hvalen. En av dem var utstyr for opptak av skytelinen på hvalbåter. De to andre var et flytende trankokeri med faste tanker for mottak av ferdig utkokt olje. Den siste var en kokerikjel for om bord montering. Alle patentene var gyldige fra 16/9-1910.
         I 1903 ominnredet han dampskipet Admiralen til verdens første moderne flytende hvalkokeri. Med dette innledet han den norske hvalfangst i Antarktis. I 1913 bygde Christen Christensen den første fabrikk i Norge for herding av hvalolje.
         På generalforsamlingen i A/S Ørnen 5/10-1912 meddelte Chr.Christensen at han ville tre tilbake som disponent. Hans sønn Søren L.Christensen overtok som ny disponent.
         Han har hatt større betydning for Sandefjord/Sandars næringsliv enn noen annen av byens og bygdens innbyggere, og i Norges historie er han mannen som "beviste, hva alle anså som et umulig foretagende, at det flytende kokeri kunne operere på alle verdenshav"

         1845–1923, BORN IN Sandefjord, Norwegian industry and whale company owner, and father of Lars Christensen. Took over his fathers shipbuilding facilities Rødtangen in 1868, later known as Framnæs Mek.Værksted . In 1881/82 Christensen started building of seal catchers in a row, all with Sandefjord as home port. The vessels had names as JASON, ELIDA, HERTHA and FORTUNA.
         Started in the beginning of the years of the 1880 as owner of sealing vessels and started expeditions to the islands in the West-Antarctic.
         In 1889 he sold all the vessels to the company A/S Oceana were he was the manager. Chr.Christensen was a genius regarding purchasing property of companies in liquidation with great value on auctions. In 1886 he purchased from Knutsen and Herlovsens bankruptcy in Larvik for Nkr.74.000, 5 bottlenose cathers. Estimated value was Nkr.300.000.
         Chr.Christensen was the 21st of January 1895 appointed as he is appointed as knight of the order of St. Olav 1st.class. The 11th of September 1911 he is appointed commander of the order of St. Olav, 2nd class "for generally beneficial business".
         Chr.Christensen had three patents directly related to whaling. The patents have numbers as 21240, 21345 and 21346, and mailnly cover patents in connection with the processing of whale. One of the patents was a device to pick up the shooting line on the whale catcher. The others was a "Floating train-oil factory with fixed tanks for reception of the extracted oil" and the other a "Cooking boiler, built into the ship's hull". All patents was valid from the year of 1910.
         In 1903 he converted the steam ship ADMIRALEN to the worlds first modern floating factory. By this he established the Norwegian whaling in the Antarctic. In 1913 Christen Christensen built the first factory in Norway for hardening of whale oil.
         On the general assembly in A/S Ørnen the 5th of Oct.1912 announced Chr.Christensen that he wanted to step back as manager. His son Mr.Søren L.Christensen took over as the new manager.
         His enterprise has been of greater importance to the the business community in Sandefjord/Sandars than any other of the citizen in this area, and in the Norwegian history as the man who "proved, what everyone else consider as a next to impossible project, that a floating whaling factory could operate free on all seas"
